Top Romantic Spots on the Big Island of Hawai'i

Love is in the air! Wishing all of you a Happy Valentine’s & Aloha Friday. In celebration of this day, I am sharing my top favorite romantic spots on the island.
Whether you are looking for a romantic place to spend the day or the perfect spot for popping “the big question”, to adventurous ways to celebrate love, the Big Island of Hawai’i truly has it all.
For those who want to mix some adventure and adrenaline with their romance, look no further. Lace up your hiking shoes, rent a four wheel drive, and gear up for a fun filled day of hiking to waterfall, wild horses and secluded beach in Waipio Valley. Want a different type of romantic adventure, no problem. Experience the spectacular beauty of the Mauna Kea Summit. See the sunset in an unforgettable above-the-clouds view from the world’s tallest mountain, and during the wintertime, play in snow in Hawai’i.
Looking for a romantic beach getaway, escape together to Green Sand Beach. The island’s most secluded beach offers a four wheel drive adventure, beautiful views of the coastline, and of course a bright green sand beach. For a fine white sand beach, 69 beach offers semi private coves nestled between trees.
Pololū Valley
Make it to the end of the scenic highway 270 and experience the majesty of the Big Island’s dramatic Kohala coastline. Located eight miles east of Hawi, Pololū Valley’s ancient air of mystery lends a particularly romantic feeling to the landscape. High above waves that crash onto the rocks are several lookout areas that offer sweeping views of the sea cliffs with cascading waterfalls over them. If a touch of adventure is what you seek, take a short hike down to the base of the valley through which runs sparkling, spring fed Pololū Stream. A tree-shaded picnic area, rocky shoreline, and rustic makeshift swing will bring the kid out of you. Spending the day relaxing with your special someone by the shoreline of Pololū Valley can be your perfect romantic getaway.

Anaeho’omalu Bay
Perfectly situated for sunset viewing, grab your sweetheart’s hand and find a place to perch in the sand. ʻAnaehoʻomalu, also known as A-Bay, is the perfect spot to sip a tropical cocktail and watch the sunset or experience one of the many ocean activities available to ocean lovers. Enjoy snorkeling, stand up paddle board, kayaking and soak up the sun at this scenic beauty. Take a sunset cocktail cruise, or explore the ocean floor and colorful coral reefs on a glass-bottom boat. However you choose to spend the day at A-Bay, it will surely be a day to remember.
Mauna Kea
Why not proclaim your love from the highest mountain top in the world? Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain, standing tall at 13,803 feet above sea level (it’s over 33,000 feet high when measured from its base on the ocean floor). As the island’s most prominent volcano, it is home to spectacular panoramic views. After watching an unforgettable sunset, head back down to the Visitors center where you can enjoy the beauty of space through telescopes.
Rainbow Falls
Just a short drive outside of historic downtown Hilo, Rainbow Falls is one of the most easily accessible waterfalls on the Big Island. Known in the Hawaiian language as Waiānuenue, meaning “Rainbow Water,” the falls cascade more than 80 feet into a turquoise pool. The lovely park landscaped in lush tropical foliage makes this place the picturesque location for a romantic picnic. Although this inviting pool may seem like the perfect place to swim, it’s not advised.
Volcano National Park
Let’s add some spark to your romance. Explore the Volcano National Park viewing towering tree fern forests, heat of volcanic at steam vents and the main highlight Kīlauea Caldera, where you can witness the the volcano’s fury splashing lava. Best viewing time of the Kīlauea Caldera is at night.
Green Sand Beach
Also known as Papakōlea Beach, Green Sand Beach is a magical cove far off the beaten path in South Point. The beach itself is carved in an old cinder cone belonging to the Mauna Loa volcano that contains the green crystals (olivines) that give the beach its name. It has a green tinge and varies in brightness, but is not solid green. Located between Kau and Kailua-Kona, this beach is accessible only by a four wheel drive. This picture perfect beach is beautiful and unique, don’t forget your camera.
69 Beach
Also known as Wai’alea Beach, 69 Beach offers fine white sand, placid waters, and shady semi private coves creating a tranquil, intimate day on the west shore. 69 Beach is sort of off-the-beaten-path but still a popular beach. You can find this beach 23 miles north of the Waikoloa resorts on Old Puako Road.
Laupahoehoe Nui
Make an unforgettable mark by taking a unique romantic landing at Laupahoehoe Nui on the Kohala Coast. Check out Blue Hawaiian Helicopters for their exclusive landing tour as you enjoy a 1200 foot waterfall giving you a one of a kind photo and video opportunity. Let’s not forget the soaring views of the lush Hamakua Coast, Madame Pele’s volcanic badlands and valleys of the Kohala mountains.
