Hawaii Weather | Experience Fall in Hawaii

BY KAPINA LANSDALE

Fall is one of the best seasons to visit Hawaii. After the rush of summer vacation has subsided, the islands exude a laid-back vibe but continue to offer a wealth of opportunities to visitors with deals, fun events and unique festivals. The fall season is traditionally slower here in Hawaii, making it a great time to enjoy everything the island has to offer without the crowds. Beaches are quieter, less traffic, and visitor hotspots such as Waipio Valley and the waterfalls of the Hamakua Coast are far less crowded than usual.  There are some great events that take place this time of year which can be lots of fun if your looking for something to do, or easily plan around if your looking for solitude.

Fewer Crowds

For starters, visiting Hawaii in shoulder-season means there are going to be fewer travelers experiencing the beauty of Hawaii at the same time as you. The large crowds of the summer and long gone and you’re here before the soon to be winter break travelers(snow birds), making it arguably the best time of the year to visit.

Ironman World Championship

The Ironman World Championship comes to Kona the first half of October with international athletes here to compete in the world’s premier triathlon event. Downtown Kailua-Kona is buzzing the week before the event with events and a parade and will be absolutely jam-packed the day of. The crowds can be overwhelming, but it can be fun experience to check out all of the vendors, pre-event preparations and cheer the athletes on. The island returns to its usual slow pace immediately after race weekend.

Kona Coffee Festival

Each year in November, Kona coffee’s world-renown reputation along with the unique cultural heritage of the past tells the story of coffee traditions that produced this American legacy. The Kona Coffee Cultural Festival is a much more laid-back, local event featuring ten days of tastings, gallery tours, lei contests, hula dancing, and more. This multi-day event provides the opportunity to pick and choose events that interest you. Not to mention the smaller crowds this time of year will allow you to truly enjoy everything you attend.  Check out great food from local vendors, dozens of coffee growers sampling their products, and open doors at the village’s many art galleries, all just a quick walk from the Kailua Pier.
