International Women's Day

BY KAPINA LANSDALE

Since the first gathering back in 1911, International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global celebration of social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women around the world.

International Women’s Day is a celebration of unity, advocacy, reflection, and action. IWD has been occurring for well over a century and continues to grow each and every day.

So each year, during this time, the world inspires women and celebrates their achievements. Together we can make a difference, think globally and act locally! Let’s create a future for girls bright, equal, safe and rewarding.

Colors signify International Women’s Day

Originally, purple symbolizes Women. In 1908, the combination of purple, green, and white was created from the Women’s Social and Political Union in the UK to symbolize Women’s Equality. Each of the colors representing something great– purple signifies justice and dignity, green for hope, and white representing purity.

History of IWD

International Women’s Day (IWD) has been observed since the early 1900’s which was a time with great expansion and turbulence in the industrialized world with population growth and radical ideologies.

1908 through 1910

Where it all began, when there was critical debate amongst women. The oppression and inequality of women had sparked them to become more vocal and active in campaigning for change. This sparked 15,000 women to march through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay, and the right to vote!

The following year in 1909 the very first National Women’s Day (NWD) was observed across the United States on the 28th of February. Women continued to celebrate NWD on the last Sunday of February until 1913.

In 1910 an International Conference of Working Women was held in Copenhagen. This is where a woman named Clara Zetkin who at the time was a leader of the Women’s Office for the social democratic party in Germany considered the idea of an International Women’s Day. She proposed that women from every country should celebrate every year the same day a Women’s Day. With a unanimous approval taken place at a conference with over 100 women from 17 different countries representing unions, social parties, working women’s club and parliament, thus created International Women’s Day.

International Women’s Day

2000 until today 2020

By the new millennium, IWD activity worldwide had dramatically halted. Feminism wasn’t a popular topic and needed to be sparked up once again. There were battles that have not been won and gender parity still not met.

In 2001, International Women’s Day had launched a digital hub to re spark the important platform to celebrate the successful achievements of women.

Celebrating 100 years of International Women’s Day in 2011, President Barack Obama proclaimed March to be “Women’s History Month” to reflect the extraordinary accomplishments of women in shaping the country’s history.

The world has witnessed significant change in both women’s and society’s thoughts about women’s equality. Some younger generation women may feel that all the battles have been won for women, while women from the 70’s know oh to well the longevity of it.

It’s unfortunate fact that women are still not paid equally to that of their male counterparts, women still are not present in equal numbers in business or politics, and globally women’s health, education, and violence against them is worse than that of men.

However, there have been many great improvements over time. There are female prime ministers and astronauts, women can work and have a family, and have real choices.

So each year, during this time, the world inspires women and celebrates their achievements. Together we can make a difference, think globally and act locally! Let’s create a future for girls bright, equal, safe and rewarding.
